Santoso (Contentedness)

215. “Kathañca, mahārāja, bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti?

"And how is a monk content?

Idha, mahārāja, bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihārikena cīvarena, kucchiparihārikena piṇḍapātena.

So yena yeneva pakkamati, samādāyeva pakkamati.

Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, pakkhī sakuṇo yena yeneva ḍeti, sapattabhārova ḍeti.

Just as a bird, wherever it goes, flies with its wings as its only burden;

Evameva kho, mahārāja, bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihārikena cīvarena kucchiparihārikena piṇḍapātena.

so too is he content with a set of robes to provide for his body and almsfood to provide for his hunger.

So yena yeneva pakkamati, samādāyeva pakkamati.

Wherever he goes, he takes only his barest necessities along.

Evaṃ kho, mahārāja, bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti.

This is how a monk is content.
